Stair steps up off the Highland Rim

Town sits around 1,068 feet, and Algood Mountain stands over it at 1,456, one of a run of low, wide ridges that step this country up from the Rim toward the Plateau. Underneath is cherty limestone, so the soil is shallow, full of stone, and sheds water fast. Land like that puts up red cedar, sassafras, sumac and blackberry on its own. A mulching head suits it. It rides over stone instead of digging in.

Bear Creek and the branch bottoms

Four small waters box the town in: Bear Creek north, Turkey Creek east, Burtons Branch southwest, Kuykendall Branch northwest. Those bottoms keep the moisture the ridges throw off, and privet and honeysuckle get into them first, thick and rooted in soft footing. Farther north, Spring Creek runs dry in its lower miles where the limestone takes it. That’s karst. Water here goes down as readily as sideways, so bottom work waits on a dry stretch. Ridge work doesn’t.

Lots pushing out, fields going quiet

Algood picked up nearly five hundred people between 2010 and 2020, and the lots came with them. New ground on a ridge wants a level spot and a way in, without losing the hardwood worth keeping. Out north and west of town, along Hilham Road, it’s pasture that came out of production. Fencerows widen. Field corners close in. Cedar takes the open middle, and cedar cut at the ground doesn’t sprout back the way hardwood does.

Out I-40 and north on 111

The trip runs east on I-40 to exit 288 at Cookeville, then north on 111 through Algood toward Overton County. You climb most of the way. Wilson County is Central Basin, with deeper soil and softer relief. By the time these ridges start stepping up, it’s different country. South of town, White Plains was an important stopover on the old Walton Road between Nashville and Knoxville, long before the railroad depot put Algood on the map.
