Caterpillar 275 XE track loader with a Vail drum mulching head standing on fresh mulch

Equipment · Wilson County, TN

One CAT track loader. One Vail mulching head.

One machine does the forestry mulching, land clearing and brush removal on every job we run out of Lebanon: a CAT 275 XE compact track loader with a Vail hi-flow drum mulcher on the front. Tracks instead of tires, and timber up to 8″ in a single pass.

no burning, no debris piles

The machine

CAT 275 XE compact track loader

Tracks, not tires. It carries the mulching head into ground a wheeled machine has no business on.

The 275 XE is a compact track loader, which means the weight rides on rubber tracks instead of four tires. Ground pressure stays low, so we can work wet bottoms and side hills without chewing up the dirt you’re keeping.

It also has the hydraulic flow to run a mulching head hard all day. A machine that can only feed the drum in bursts turns a one-day job into three.

One machine, one operator, and Shaun is usually the one in the seat.

The attachment

Vail hi-flow drum mulcher

A drum of steel teeth on the front of the loader. It grinds what’s standing and leaves it on the ground.

A drum mulcher is a spinning steel drum set with teeth. It takes brush, saplings and standing timber up to 8″ and grinds them down where they stand, in one pass, without anything being pushed into a pile first.

Hi-flow hydraulics are what keep the drum turning under load. That’s the difference between working steadily through a thick stand and stalling out every few feet in it.

What comes out the back is a mulch layer across the ground. Nothing hauled, nothing burned, and no debris pile left in the corner of the field for you to deal with next spring.

What the machine means for your ground

Equipment only matters for what it does to the dirt and how long it takes.

01

Ground stays put

Tracks spread the machine’s weight instead of digging in, so we can work wet ground and side hills without churning up what you’re keeping.

02

One pass, not three

The drum takes standing timber up to 8″ the first time through. Fewer passes means less time on the meter and less traffic over your dirt.

03

Tight spots count

A compact loader gets between buildings, down a fence line and around the trees you want left standing. It goes where a wheeled machine can’t.

Machine questions

Questions about the machine itself.

What it needs from your ground, and what it leaves on it.

Enough to bring it off the ramps and turn it. Before Shaun comes out, measure the clear opening of your narrowest gate, note anything overhead crossing the entrance, and check whether a cattle grid or a culvert on the drive will carry the weight. Give him those numbers and he can tell you straight away.

It is what the drum takes cleanly on one pass, not a line it refuses to cross. Thicker material wants more working, and that shows up in the quote as time rather than as a refusal. Send a photograph with something in it for scale and Shaun will tell you which side of ordinary your ground falls on.

Steeper than you would happily mow, though that is judged on the hill rather than from the gate. Loose rock, old gullies and blown-down timber underfoot all matter as much as the angle does. Shaun walks it first and says plainly where he will and won’t put the machine.

Because whoever prices your job is the same one sitting in the seat on the day. Nothing gets handed off to somebody you have never met, and nothing falls through the gap between the walk and the work. It also puts one set of tracks over your ground rather than several, which the ground notices.

A blade pushes. It shifts material ahead of it and has to put that somewhere, which is how you end up with a windrow at the edge of a field. The drum works standing growth down where it is rooted and leaves it lying, so nothing is shoved into a heap in the first place.
