Limestone under a thin lid

Gallatin sits at 538 feet, low in the Central Basin, with limestone close under the sod. Up on the rises you get a few inches of dirt and then stone. Along Station Camp Creek west of town, and on the low ground three miles south where the Cumberland goes by, it’s deep. That split decides what you are up against. Shallow ground puts up cedar, honey locust and briar. Deep ground puts up privet and honeysuckle thick enough to lose a man at six feet.

Cedar takes the open field first

Red cedar shows up soonest on disturbed ground, and limestone soil suits it. It’s also shade intolerant, which is the useful part. It does not get going under a standing hardwood canopy, so it goes after pasture. Let a field sit a few years and the cedar is past your knee. Let it sit longer and it’s a stand. Cedar is soft wood, and a drum mulcher takes it standing.

Farm ground that sold before anybody built

This town went from 30,278 people to 44,431 in the ten years to 2020, and most of that came off farmland. Plenty of it traded hands while it was still in hay. On a tract like that, three things want answering. Where the corners run, whether a truck can reach the back, and whether the low end by the creek is buildable or just wet. Clearing the understory answers all three, and the big trees can stay.

Twenty miles up 109

Out of Lebanon, 109 runs north through LaGuardo and crosses the Cumberland right where Gallatin starts, so it’s about twenty miles and one bridge. Below town that river is Old Hickory Lake, held back since the dam closed in 1954, and the bottoms east toward Cairo sit near eighty feet under town and stay soft. Shaun runs the machine himself, him and his son, family-owned since 2024.
