Central Basin ground, 751 feet

Spring Hill straddles the Williamson and Maury line, thirty miles south of Nashville, in the Ordovician limestone lowland that makes the Central Basin. The rock under it is phosphatic limestone, and what weathers off that is clay, well drained but slow to take water. Mimosa is the name for that ground, and the timber it carries is hackberry, elm, black walnut, honey locust and redcedar. Cleared ground here doesn’t ease into being woods. It goes cedar and locust in a few seasons, then hackberry behind them.

North of the county line

The Williamson end of town runs up toward Thompson’s Station, fifty feet higher and still open in patches, hay and pasture on the same limestone clay. Water off the south end of Williamson County goes north to the West Harpeth, which meets the Harpeth a few miles northwest of Franklin. Ridge ground like that firms up first in the spring, so it is the part you can get on early while the low end is still wet.

Low ground on the south side

McCutcheon Creek cuts the bottom along the south side of town, and bottom ground behaves nothing like the ridge above it. It stays soft into the spring and comes back thicker every year. Briars take the water’s edge first, and everything else seeds in behind them. Ground like that reads best after a dry stretch. Leave the mulch lying on it, too. A mat on the surface holds the dirt through the next big rain.

Getting a machine down there

Out from the Wilson County line it is I-840 west, then a short run south on I-65 through Basin country the whole way, no rim to climb. Shaun Belcher and his son have been at this since 2024, and Shaun still runs the machine. Licensed and insured, 4.9 stars across 25 reviews. He would rather walk a property than talk about it over the phone.
