Rock close to the surface

The glades gave the place its name, and a soil series carries it too. Gladeville is very shallow, three to twelve inches down to thin-bedded limestone, mapped across the Nashville Basin. What grows on that is red cedar with hackberry, hickory, ash and sumac mixed in. Cedar is the one that spreads. Let a field sit two seasons past its last mowing and there’ll be seedlings in it. By year five, mowing’s over.

Wet end, dry end

Water here mostly leaves straight down. The USGS lists a site south of the community called Gladeville Sink, logged as a land sinkhole rather than a stream. The rock takes the runoff, and the glade bakes dry. Suggs Creek picks up the low ground a few miles west, and bottoms like that stay soft and grow privet and briars long after the glade has quit. Plenty of properties carry both ends, and one machine takes either.

Interchange ground

I-840 comes through with an exit at Stewarts Ferry Pike and another a mile and a half north at Central Pike and Highway 109. The Nashville Superspeedway sits a few miles south. Warehouses and subdivisions keep getting drawn toward old pasture and hayfield. A warehouse rezoning off Couchville Pike lost by one vote at the county commission in 2025. So ground like this gets asked to do two things. One owner wants a building site opened enough to see where the rock comes up before an excavator prices it. Another just wants the back forty grazeable again.

A short run southwest

It’s about eleven miles southwest of Lebanon, down I-840 or out Central Pike, a short haul either way. On soil this thin, anything that has to dig is the wrong tool; a blade working a few inches of dirt over flagstone shoves the dirt off and leaves you the rock. Cutting the cedar where it stands and leaving what comes down on the surface keeps the little soil there is where the glade put it.
