A rise above Stoners Creek

The hill in the name is real. Green Hill sits at about 646 feet, a little proud of the Central Basin floor around it, and the ground falls off south and west into Stoners Creek, which carries this corner of the county over to the Stones River and the Cumberland behind that. That shape decides the work. Up on the crown the soil is a shallow clay over limestone with rock two or three feet down, and nothing roots deep. In the creek draws it stays damp late, and whatever gets cut there comes back twice as fast.

Hackberry, locust and cedar

Basin ground like this grows a particular mix. Oak and hickory where the soil holds, then hackberry, elm, locust and red cedar taking every gap. Below that sits the part people want gone. Privet thick in the damp ground, honeysuckle up the slope, greenbrier through both. A mulching head suits that tangle, because it takes the whole stand standing up and leaves the hardwoods you want kept right where they are.

Farm ground that turned into lots

Most of this was pasture and timber inside living memory. Wilson County is adding better than four thousand people a year, and the subdivisions off North Greenhill Road went in on fields. The high school on that road opened in 2020. New lots run a quarter to a third of an acre. So the timber behind a new house isn’t a wood lot. It’s a piece of the yard, and it’s usually thicker than the survey made it look.

Close quarters against the Davidson line

Green Hill runs right up on the county line, close enough that some addresses read Old Hickory and others read Mount Juliet, and a back lot corner can be a neighbor’s patio. On ground that tight, the access questions matter as much as the stand. The gate, the swale, the shoulder that goes soft after rain. It’s under twenty miles west of Lebanon out Lebanon Road, US 70 through here.
