Opening Up Sunlit Woodland in Tennessee
A closed-in stand thinned to open, sunlit woodland with the good trees left standing.
The woods were closed in. Mature trees up top, and underneath them a solid understory of brush and saplings that kept light off the ground and kept anybody from walking through it.
We thinned it rather than cleared it. The mulching head took out the understory and the crowded small stems and left the trees worth keeping, so the canopy stayed and the floor opened up. Everything that came down stayed on the ground as mulch.
The difference is light. Sun reaches the floor now, you can see through the stand, and the ground is open enough to walk, drive across, or lay out a home site if that’s where it goes.
A stand like this holds its shape once it’s opened. With the understory ground out at the root, next season brings grass and seedlings instead of the same thicket, and that is a great deal easier to stay ahead of.
